Server Topographical Survey (STS) [Online map]

We don't need no stinkin' blueprints.

I'm working on a map of the current, still private Minecraft server.

I started mapping as a volunteer when Minecraft Beta v1.7 was still online and everyone was still packing up for the move.

Currently I develop the new Minecraft v1.0 world map and the interface. 104.85km^2 will be prerendered in day and night mode, The nether and a detailed view of the spawn will be included.

Before the map (and the website) online is have those things to be done

  • Creating 409600 chunks [100%]
  • Rendering map tiles [100%]
  • Fixing map errors [80%]
  • Adding custom elements like signs, points of interest [100%]
  • Re-working the website to make it faster (smaller size, better code), optimization, layout, ... [100%]
  • Modifying Google Maps viewer. [80%]
  • Uploading the stuff [100%]

Finishing this list may take a day or two. (probably)
Currently at college. Will work on it ASAP when I get back in about 2-3h.

In case anyone has any ideas what to add or what to mark on the map feel free to post.

Very nice!
Did you write the tile image generation yourself or picked up an already existing project and shoehorned it to your needs? Curious to the algorithms used to determine the topmost visible parts of the chunks to render them as tiles.
Being a software developer myself, this thing relevant to my interests.
I'm trying to imagine myself with a personality.

Tectonicus is the mapper/tile-renderer. The source code is not public. Tectonicus is written in Python.

The map viewer is Google Maps and written in JavaScript which I modify to add functions (for example the URL to share maps) or the style.

------------------------------------

I dont think it checks for the top-most blocks.. because it renders the world as it is ingame so the whole chunks and then makes a screenshot of them I believe.

Top most blocks would only work for top down 2D maps.
