Steam Linux Beta

...or, Penguins touch my gun!

Steam has now just opened up the Linux Beta to everyone. For those running Linux, you can pull the installer and get it into your system relatively easily. So far, so good, there's a few quirks but this is a free beta, and you get Team Fortress 2 anyway.

So, some tips from an old hand:
  • If you're new and want to try it, pull a copy of Kubuntu. Don't get regular Ubuntu. Instead, go to http://kubuntu.org and pull a KDE based flavor. It'll look much like Windows XP.
  • AMD/ATI or NVidia card? Pull the binary drivers! Even though your card may be supported by some native open source drivers, they're not as fast nor as good. This isn't to spite them, alas, it's just that they got a few years to get on par. There's always a bit of lag, so hit up the drivers. Most distros will have packages for them. Ubuntu and variants will have it listed as a "Restricted Driver". (Intel cards are only open source, but Intel writes them and releases the source)
  • TURN COMPIZ/DESKTOP EFFECTS OFF! Desktop effects (like wobbly windows and transparency) use a composing window manager that uses OpenGL for it's work. However, there's been some burn on that in the past. A good rule of thumb is One OpenGL using program at a time. Besides, you want the play games, not wobble windows, right? Turn it off, save it for shooting that spy on your right.
  • And finally, 64-bit systems need 32-bit libraries installed. They're not installed by default, but they are relatively easy to install. Check your distro's Wiki for information; by this time you should have a page for installing Steam, the dependent libraries, and games.

"Oooo! Your gun shoots penguins. Intimidating.

By now, your chosen distro of Linux will have a package for you:
  • Ubuntu: Provided by Valve. Possibly now in Canonical's partner repo.
  • RedHat/Fedora: Steam installer repackaged into an RPM.
  • Arch: Steam package there too.
  • Gentoo: Add the gamerlay overlay via layman, and emerge steam-games-meta.
  • Others: Binary Tarball available.

Valve is putting their bug reports on Github here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux
