Survival Fun & Strategies

Part of the fun of survival mode is always pushing harder to get a longer time, if only by a couple seconds. If you have any good strategies you'd like to share feel free to post them; A.M.Zinthos!, Matty, Patriotic Potato, and myself are attempting to go through all the stages to try and max out our times and to record them so you can see us die horrible deaths xD

Some rules of thumb for good times:
  • Everybody uses shotguns. At point blank range they get a 5x bonus multiplier and with four people shooting at a tank, they'll fall before you even need to start reloading. Noticeable exceptions: Death Toll's Streets
  • Good spots are usually close to the ammo supply, but not always. Gauge your ammo appropriately if you're far away, use your pistols all the time only switching to your shotgun for tanks.
  • First tank at 0:40, first double tank at 5:30, large break at around 9:00 which extends to about 9:20

No Mercy Rooftop -- 14:20.96
We hold out on the right building (if you're facing the helipad), running for ammo when necessary. This spot is pretty safe since zombies have to climb up to get to you but very deadly if you're caught off guard by a tank (as we were >_<). The area underneath the minigun is also a good spot to try and hold out.

Death Toll Drains -- 20:21.30
We take up positions in the corner of the room by the medpacks, conserving ammo as much as possible only going for a resupply at the 9:00 break. Holding the pipe above the ammo has also proven to be a pretty good spot.

And remember, whenever you game.
The Plan. It is sacred and must be formulated at the beginning. Always follow the plan, never let the plan down. If you fail the plan the plan will fail you. In case of emergency ragequit.

Hunting rifle or assault rifle might seem useful in some situations in Survival, but I learned the hard lesson already a few times that Autoshotgun is one of the more flexible weapons in L4D and the weaknesses of the other weapons just tend to backfire on you.

Also you need to pay attention to the sound cues in the game. There's no excuse in having a teammate behind you strangle as you hear a sound right away when that happens. You need to be able to pay attention in L4D, and it's even more important in survival!

On some maps, try to grab items most far away from the "holdout" spot first... if possible.

Haha, blast, just barely edged me out by a minute :P Very impressive. I'm wondering if it's possible to legitimately get 30 minutes on any of the maps.
