Well, technically, three of the nine classes -could- be female, logically, based on the time period. (And no, not Pyro. Sorry.)
Medic, Spy, and Engineer.
Women would have been serving in clerical positions, as well as espionage/intelligence-gathering work, industry, research, and so forth.
Many scientific positions, of course.

Actually... a reporter isn't a half bad suggestion for some kind of theme to the civillian. Since the mode with the Civ *is* supposed to be named VIP anyways, it would make sense - a reporter is often a VIP, having a bunch of burly, rough & tumble guys escort a nobody across hostile territory doesn't make much sense. And a reporter is still mundane enough compared to the rest of the cast that he would be solely fit for running away, as reporters just get kidnapped when in hostile territory IRL, they don't actually fight their way out XD
Speaking of VIP... any of you remember that Hunted style gameplay, and how it's fallen out of favor? I always wondered what happened to that.
